An Ode to Kiehl’s

It’s been quite a while since I first got my hands on a Kiehl’s product. It all started with the Ultra Light Daily UV Defense sun protector, that I got last summer and really liked. It’s the perfect sun blocker with high protection, yet it never left a white film on my face and sinks in super quickly. It’s on its last legs now but I will definitely be repurchasing this one.

On the topic of repurchasing things, my beloved Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with avocado is about to run out and I’m crying crocodile tears, let me tell you! This stuff is incredible, super hydrating and rich, but not greasy at all and makes applying concealer and eyeshadow a dream. These past winters I’ve suffered from super dry and flakey eyelids – super attractive, I know. But not this winter, thanks to this little fella. Over the last season this has become my holy grail of face products and I will head to town and stock up on this as soon as I run out.

I got the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream on a whim at the Stockholm Airport when I flew back home to Germany from Christmas and have been using it every single day since then. It’s not my favorite of all three products, but nevertheless it does a good job at keeping my skin moisturized and provides a good base for any make-up I’m applying on top.

What are your favorite products from Kiehl’s – anything I should try next?

Skincare Fall to Winter Edit

When transitioning from season to season you normally switch up your wardrobe. Goodbye to those flimsy dresses, open shoes and leaving a jacket at home. But as your body needs more protection throughout the colder months to keep healthy, so does your skin. I am currently in the process of updating my skincare regimen to a more appropriate routine preparing for the big drop in temperature that is inevitably going to happen in foreseeable time. Of course I did not take all of my skincare products with me to Sweden so this makes it a bit easier for me to sort through my stash, deciding what to keep, what to leave for next year and what items I need to add.

Starting with my keepers, it is all about again protection and moisturizing. As I have mentioned before my hands tend to get really dry so I like to always carry my L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream with me wherever I go. It is rich, keeps my hand soft and sinks in quite quickly, so no oily marks all over your keyboard!

We all apply SPF before a good ol’ sunbathing session but most of us forget this step in their daily routine regardless of of season and whether the sun is shining or not. Fact is, there are UVA and UVB rays shining on us all day whether you see them or not. They make the skin age quicker, developing wrinkles and impurities at an earlier age. You won’t see the results of using this regularly this within a week, a month or even a year, but sooner or later the day will come.

I am currently in the midst of writing an ode to the Body Shop Body Butters but I just can’t help it. The perfect luxurious yet not incredibly expensive treat for your skin after a nice shower. It sinks in quite fast (can you tell this is a major criterion for me?) and smells nice and soft. Like anybody else’s my skin tends to get quite dry and as deep care treatment I put this on every night for a couple of days in a row and instantly see results. No more flakiness!

One more Body Shop product to finish off, this Serum-In-Oil is the last step in my skincare routine and supports regeneration over night. It is moisturizing yet doesn’t make me shine like a stick of butter and smells very nice. A few drops are enough to cover the entire face and so far I have not noticed any dry patches on my forehead which I had big struggles with last year.

Now on to the products that I would like to add to my skincare.
I love a good face mask and this over-night version by Origins is raved about lots in the blogger community. Especially after using exfoliating and deep-cleansing masks I notice my skin gets a bit tight and to put the moisture back I would like to add this to my routine. I’ve also never used an over-night mask so I am anticipating this to be very rich yet not too heavy to stain my pillows. Any experiences with this Drink Up Intensive option?

As you can see from my keeper’s I currently don’t own a daily face cream. While using the SPF alone currently works fine as it is not that cold yet, I will definitely find an option to provide my skin with a little more care and moisture for the day. As I trust in the brand I am keen to try out the Make A Difference Plus + cream to see whether it really holds up to its great reviews. Can you tell I’ve made it my mission to avoid any dry patches at all this winter?

Apart from dry skin I also suffer from really dry eye-lids. Especially the inner area gets super dry and flakey, a rather gross sight – let me tell you! I’ve tried it with a ton of creams last year but none of them seemed to help. And while I still like my Origins GinZeng Eye Cream in the morning I want to add a bit more oomph at night to repair any damages. I have only heard great things about this Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado one by Kiehl’s and will definitely invest in one of those little pots.

Lastly, who doesn’t get chapped lips in the colder months? Ever tried applying lipstick on top of that? Yeah, not a good look. The wild Argan Oil range by the Body Shop is supposed to be super rich and caring and goes by the name of Solid Oil Lips. If that doesn’t moisturizing then I don’t know what! I’ve given this a quick try a couple of days ago in the shop and think I must head back soon!

One product that will leave my bathroom shelve this season is the Origins GinZing day cream. I really liked this during the warmer months as the gel texture is very nice and light, sinks in quickly and is the perfect base for already relatively moisturized skin. But as you can tell from the description I have just given you, not exactly an ideal companion during those colder months to come.

I’m curious as to what you will be replacing and adding to your skincare routine, please share in the comments!

Used Up and Repurchased

Because I have been using up quite a few products lately I thought I would share the ones that have made their way back into my cupboards.
First up we have the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermo Cleanser. This is probably the most gentle cleanser I own and I always go back to whenever my skin is acting up a bit. It’s a liquid-y cream that you massage into your skin to take off your make-up. It doesn’t contain perfume which is perfect for sensitive skin as it stops the skin from drying out. It isn’t the greatest cleanser ever invented but a trusty option to keep on your shelve!

At night I like to exfoliate my skin with a chemical peeling instead of a physical one. I’ve noticed my face doesn’t feel all tight and tense after using this as opposed to other peelings I’ve tried so I decided to repurchase the Avène Cleanance K Gel-Cream. It smells fresh and slightly zingy and makes my skin feel ultra smooth after applying this. I started incorporating this a while ago and have definitely seen an improvement on my skin!

A product I’ve been using for probably almost ten years now are the Balea Eye Make-Up Remover Pads. I prefer the oil-free version as they don’t leave my eye-area all greasy but in return they do a rubbish job at removing waterproof mascara. I believe I have used them every single day for the past years as they are fuss-free, take off everything that sits on my eyes and is an absolute bargain at 1,25€ for I think 50 pads.

My holy grail of handcare is without a doubt the L’Occitane Hand Cream with 20% Shea Butter. This stuff smells amazing and really works magic on my hands. It is very moisturizing but also sinks into the skin quite fast making it perfect for an on-the-go girl like me. I like having soft hands but still want to be able to pick things up without them slipping through my fingers – enter this gem. I always have a miniature version of this in my hand bag and will definitely invest in the full size version for the home.

On to make-up, this Lacura Eyebrow pencil in Blonde is probably the cheapest eye-brow pencil I own. But let me tell you, this stuff is gooood! I got mine at Aldi, a really cheap discounter supermarket which I normally wouldn’t purchase make-up from. After hearing many great reviews on YouTube and other German blogs I had to have it and it is really great. Perfect color match, not too hard or too soft and a steal at 2,49€!

What are some of the products you keep on repurchasing?

Ciao ciao Aluminum!

IMG_3449So this whole debate around deodorants, or anti-transpirants containing aluminum certainly stirred up some controversy. While probably anybody that read up on the side effects and diseases it may cause agrees to its bad working, however it is so hard to find a replacement that will not turn you into a sweaty Betty after five minutes or prevents body odor.
At first I tried a couple of drugstore options, not even worth mentioning on here. I picked them up primarily because they were free of aluminum salts but also because they smelled really nice and fresh. Well… let me tell you! That nice and fresh smell only lasted about an hour. I’m by no means a really sweaty person and I don’t tend to smell very quickly, but at the end of the day I literally walked around with my arms pressed against my body so nobody would notice!
I then did some research on YouTube and the odd blog, and finally purchased the Soapwalla Deodorant Cream. I had never used a cream deodorant before and so it did take some time to get used to. However, once you’re over the application, it dries really quickly and has a herbal-ly scent to it that doesn’t linger too long. Thank god, because I really didn’t like the scent at first. Let’s just say tea-tree and lavender aren’t exactly my first choice when I want to smell fresh and clean. But like I said, it doesn’t bother me anymore.

The texture is quite funky and feels almost chunky when you first dip your finger into the pot. On the website it’s described as “frosting-like texture” which is pretty accurate if you ask me. The picture picks up quite well on the grainy-ness of the product, however, once blended it goes on really smooth and leaves no bumps or patches.
Watching a few interviews with the producer, Rachel Winard, is really passionate about her product and for good reason, because it works. It has great lasting power and doesn’t harm the skin in doing so. The products are all 100% organic and produced in the United States.
To sum up, whether it is this deodorant you will choose, or any other anti-transpirant that is free of aluminum salts, I strongly advise you to look into the subject and educate yourself a bit about the harm you may do to your body by generously spritzing it with your favorite deodorant. I’m by no means an expert but I think it is a good way to implement a bit more healthy ingredients into my daily routine and rule out one more way to die (uh ohhh dramatic!)

Let me know in the comments whether you have already made the switch or maybe also not intend to? Any other brands that I could try that maybe have a nicer scent to it? I’m curious to hear your opinions!

Pamper Rituals

IMG_8323As you know I spent my last weekend camping out at a festival. We had the best time ever, dancing to all our favorite DJ’s, playing drinking games at noon and meeting tons of people from all over the place. Being back from the woods (shower! bed! food!) also means one thing: a good ol’ pampering session to make up for what lacked during the weekend. Obviously the cleaning facilities weren’t exactly in mint condition so I had to make do with what was given. (A post about the beauty items I brought and used (!) is coming your way tomorrow).

Usually sunday serves as my pamper night: getting the face masks out, doing my nails, watching a few episodes of Suits or what have you and then fall asleep in fresh sheets. But no, this called for an emergency session. After a long bath in which I exfoliated with my new Soap & Glory miniature Scrub ‘Em or Leave ‘Em body scrub, I made myself a cuppa Earl Grey which has easily become my favorite kind over the past months. I opted for a cosy bra and applied the Sanctuary Spa 5 Minute Thermal Detox Mask which you will have seen in my London Haul. Not much to say about this yet other than it feels warm and lovely, but I’ll report back with a full on review if you like? Also I desperately needed to do my nails, my old polish had been sitting on my nails since before my trip to London! (Good job, Essie!). This time I opted for another Essie shade as they have become my favorite to apply recently. I went for ‘Master Plan’ on my fingers and ‘Meet Me at Sunset’ on my toes. Two coats and you’re good to go! Cuddled up in a blanket I caught up on all my favorite blogs via Bloglovin’ which is just the easiest way to keep everything organized and never miss a post. You can follow my blog here if you like.

What are your essentials to a good pamper night? I shamefully left the Cadbury’s I devoured out of the picture. Oops!
